No Disclaimers Book Tag

Hey everyone! I found this tag on Zezee with Books blog and thought this would be a fun tag to do! Since this is the no disclaimers tag, I am kind of letting my opinion fly with this one. Sorry in advance if I upset anyone!

WHICH TROPE(S) IN BOOKS ANNOY YOU THE MOST?

Deus ex machina – saved by God.

I hate it when the characters are saved by an unknown force or a God, when they most likely could have gotten out of the situation themselves. It just feels like a poor excuse and just plain bad writing. I really don’t like it.

WHICH WRITER(S) DO YOU THINK IS OVERRATED/OVERHYPED?

Jay Kristoff – J.K. Rowling – Veronica Roth – Stephanie Meyer

Jay Kristoff and J.K. Rowling are disgusting people that are not only not worth the hype and definitely don’t deserve it, but people are willing to align themselves with these bigots for their next book. I mean it’s honestly sad. Stop reading their books, stop defending them. Admit they’re trash and their books aren’t even that great and move on!

Veronica Roth is just not that fantastic of a writer. I couldn’t get into Divergent and The Chosen Ones wasn’t that great either. I feel like she’s been so hyped up that no one wants to admit that her books just aren’t that good. Same with Stephanie Meyer. I liked her books as a middle schooler, but looking back on them now, they’re not that great. And we have just handed this woman infamy and money for trash. Ouch.

WHAT ARE YOUR LEAST FAVORITE BOOKS YOU’VE READ SINCE YOU STARTED BLOGGING?

How To Break an Evil Curse by Laura Morrison
Slingshot by Mercedes Helnwein

These are the first two that came to mind, but there are definitely more. Both of these books were DNFs that happened very early in the book because it was that bad. Both are just so poorly written and difficult to get through that I couldn’t read them, even if I pushed myself.

WHAT IS A TERRIBLE ENDING THAT RUINED AN OTHERWISE QUALITY BOOK?

Small Favors by Erin A. Craig

This book was so good, but the ending was severely abrupt. I heard a rumor that there’s going to be a sequel, but if there’s not, then I’m sorry to anyone that reads this book and gets to the ending. It is actually painful how much is left unsaid and unresolved that I was certain that my copy of the e-book was missing a chunk of the book.

WHICH FICTIONAL CHARACTER(S) DO YOU WISH WAS NOT KILLED OFF?

Characters A and B from Soulswift by Megan Bannen

I mean, I don’t want to spoil anything, but there are two characters in Soulswift by Megan Bannen that I really wish weren’t killed off. I feel like it’s on-par with unnecessary character deaths – it just did not need to happen! And I am still hurt over this book, almost a year later.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR BOOKISH PET PEEVES?

I don’t want us here all day, but I have a few

  • Books in a series that are different sizes
  • Mid-series cover changes
  • Poorly executed thrillers/mysteries that are painfully obvious
  • Unnecessary character deaths
  • Super floppy paperbacks

Those are just the ones that quickly came to mind and I immediately cringed – they’re just all so annoying.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON CENSORSHIP AND BANNING BOOKS?

TLDR: It shouldn’t be done.

This one is tough, because while I believe in freedom of speech and allowing people to write whatever they want, there are a lot of harmful things that can be published and put out into the world. It’s like giving a voice to murderers, racists, rapists, bigots and the likes is not something I want to condone. But I’m sure there are others that would say they don’t want stories about gay or trans kids, or sex, or anti-religion, or politics being published and would be happy to ban them. Honestly, once books start getting banned or censored, it’s hard to stop others from censoring stuff that isn’t inherently bad, they just don’t like it. I wouldn’t want there to be a way to prevent people from reading books that they connect with, just because a character in the story is gay, or there’s political ideologies mentioned.

To summarize, while I would love for there to be an easy way to prevent harmful books from being published, it comes down to personal censorship and choosing to not read these books.
