Review: The Dragon and the Queen

I have been following along with this series since before book one even came out. I received an ARC of The Raven and the Dove and fell in love with this story and with this world. If you haven’t read books 1 and two, you can check out my spoiler-free reviews here:

This review may contain spoilers for books 1 and 2, but will not spoil book 3. Please read at your own risk.

A queen foretold to save the world…

Free from Malek’s clutches, Lyana returns to the world above determined to keep the isles from falling. But in a land where magic is forbidden, convincing the avians to believe in her power takes the one thing she doesn’t have—time. With Xander’s help, she must unravel the puzzle of the rift and gain their trust or lose her home forever.

A dragon in search of his destiny…

Turned into a monster by the king he loathes, Rafe flees Da’Kin. Yet even with the help of his crew, he can’t outrun the new power simmering beneath his skin or the gruesome visions haunting his dreams. A dark spirit calls out to him, and soon he’ll have to answer.

New enemies change the game as the final battle draws near…

Stuck in her spirit form, Cassi is at the mercy of the man she betrayed. Before he wreaks his vengeance, she must tell someone what she witnessed in the sacred nest. A demon walks the earth, an evil no one anticipated. But with all her friendships broken, who among them will believe her?

Prophecies unravel. War arrives. And passions burn, threatening to set the world aflame.

Am I overdramatic? Absolutely. Did this book shatter my soul and leave me screaming after reading the last page? YES IT DID. I AM A RUINED MESS. A DRAMATIC, RUINED MESS, WHO CAN ONLY TYPE IN CAPS LOCK NOW.

As a long time fan of this series, I should have been prepared for the treachery I would face. That traitorous ending not only made me scream in anger and frustration, but it broke my soul and any hope I had at finishing this series with any sanity left. NO SPOILERS BUT THIS ENDING RUINED ME. And I DIDN’T EVEN SEE IT COMING. I was so blind by my own idea of what was going to happen, that when I read what was written, it took a full Window’s reload period for my thoughts to catch up. The “HUH!?” that left my mouth encompasses all of my feelings about this betrayal!

But to be less dramatic, this book, and the entire series in general, is fantastic! The fact that I care this much about the ending, and it makes me feel this violently, is telling enough about the story and the characters. Lyana, our beautiful savior, is still a sweetheart in this book, even as she tries her hardest to be there for everyone. Rafe, our tortured soul, finally gains a feeling of purpose. Cassia, our spy, finds some redemption after betraying her friends. And Xander, our cinnamon roll, is finding his voice and his strength. Everything about this book was so beautiful.

One of my favorite things was the incorporation of the diary entries. We don’t know who’s writing them and when this took place, but it adds so much backstory to this world without becoming a lazy way of giving us backstory. It adds a lot to the story and context in what’s going on, while also feeling like we’re getting a story within a story. Which we kind of are.

I don’t want to get too mushy about this, because this book will hurt you, but my love for this series triumphs above my pain. This book is way more intense than the first two and the events that occur made me get all up in my feelings. If this is book 3, I can’t even imagine what we’re going to face in the finale.

Basically, if you’ve read the first two books and weren’t sure about reading the third one – READ THIS BOOK.

If you’re not sure you want to read this series and decide to read this review, even though you could be spoiled – READ THIS BOOK.

And if you were already planning on reading this series/book and just wanted to read my incoherent screams – HI, THANKS FOR JOINING ME. READ THIS BOOK!!!

So basically, I love this series so much and I think you should read it! And I will be curling up in bed to cry now.

I don’t even have another series that compares, so just read this one!
