When I saw Star was doing this tag, I got so excited! This is such a fun tag so thank you Star @ Star is All Booked Up for tagging me in this! Originally from Kat @ Katytastic on YouTube. I’m not going to tag anyone, but if you end up doing this tag, feel free to tag me in the comments so I can see your responses!
1. The Little Mermaid – a character who is out of their element, a “fish out of water”
Oh 100% Soulswift by Megan Bannen. Poor Gelya is thrown into a situation and forced to join and work for her enemy in order to survive. It’s great.
2. Cinderella – a character who goes through a major transformation
Miyung from Wicked Fox by Kat Cho is a great example of a character who goes through a physical transformation, but Auri from Aurora Rising by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman is a great example of mental/emotional transformation.
3. Snow White – a book with an eclectic cast of characters
Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. Bree has some very interesting friends. Alice, Selwyn (Sel), and Nick are all VERY different people and all are either best friends or love interests for Bree. Plus all of the other legendborn who Bree hang around.
4. Sleeping Beauty – a book that put you to sleep
How To Break and Evil Curse by Laura Morrison. I DNFed 10% in.
5. The Lion King – a character who had something traumatic happen to them in childhood
I mean this is almost every YA main character, but Cerys from Among the Beasts & Briars by Ashley Poston immediately comes to mind.
6. Beauty and the Beast – A beast of a book (a big book) that you were intimidated by, but found the story to be beautiful
I have to say it, House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas and The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. Both of these are big books that are so beautiful while also being intimidating and I found myself unable to put them down!
7. Aladdin – a character who gets their wish granted, for better or worse
Oh definitely Soraya from Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust. Soraya wishes to change her life and break her curse, but you have to be careful what you wish for. It’s such a great book and it’s a standalone, so if you’re looking for something dark and magical, here’s your next favorite read!
8. Mulan – a character who pretends to be someone or something they are not
This might be cheating since this is a Mulan retelling, but Maia from Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim. But she does pretend to be someone who she’s not in order to protect her family and appease the king.
9. Toy Story – a book with characters you wish would come to life
There’s so many characters I would love to come to life so I could hang out with them. But honestly, I would love for the crew from The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi to come to life, solely because I love Zofia and Enrique with all my heart! I would hang out with them all day and never be bored.
10. Disney Descendants – your favorite villain or morally ambiguous character
Personally, I love Luc from The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab. I also adore Emanuela from Beyond the Ruby Veil by Mara Fitzgerald. Both are characters that are evil, but also oddly endearing. Luc is so charming at times that I forget he’s the one who curse Addie in the first place. And Emanuela is funny and intense all the while trying to be the hero when she’s very CLEARLY the villain. I love it!
