NaNoWriMo 2020 Update #1

I had planned to post this on Monday but I forgot . . . so you’re getting it today!

This is the first year I’ve done NaNoWriMo without immediately failing and it feels really good! I’m excited to provide this update because I wasn’t sure how well NaNo was going to go this year for me, but so far, I’m pleasantly surprised!

Today, I’m going to be providing a NaNo update!

If you don’t know what NaNoWriMo is it stands for National Novel Writing Month and it’s a non-profit that runs the site, allowing access to resources and tools to help write novels! You have the entire month of November to write a 50,000 word novel (about 1,667 words a day) as well as some other cool awards you can win!

You can win awards for streaks if you update every day. Word count goals. And if you write 50,000 words in the month, the NaNoWriMo badge!

There are even personal achievement awards you can give yourself! Plus you can add friends and have group chats. There are webinars and other writing events that take place during the month. The whole site is dedicated to writers and helping us get through writing a novel!

You can choose to do something less traditional, like editing a manuscript or doing revisions. Or you can decrease or increase your goal if you want. The world is your oyster!

And if you love what NaNo is doing, you can purchase items from their shop or donate to help them continue this every year!

Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, here is where I currently am for NaNoWriMo!

Last night I hit 20,000 words exactly in my draft which is so amazing! I’ve been trying to write about 2,000 words every day, so that way if I fall a little behind, I still have enough room to hit the 1,667 needed every day.

For my average word count I’m at 2,000, but as you can see some days are better than others! On the 8th I didn’t even hit 1700 words, so I decided to make that up on the 9th, which is why there’s such a big jump.

The hardest thing about NaNo for this project is that my book has completely gone off the rails and burnt down the station too. The original idea I had has gone out the window and I’m left trying to figure out this new book. It’s a little frustrating.

But, though I want to throw my manuscript out the window, I still manage to write every day which is better than not writing at all!

As a treat, here is a sneak peak at one of my recent chapters!

Maia stood outside waiting. Her thoughts felt so jumbled but she knew she had messed up drinking so much. The point of this party wasn’t to get drunk and enjoy tonight, it was to strike. She was supposed to kill one of them, bring results home to Father. Now she was stuck outside of a bathroom questioning the decisions that led to this nauseating moment.

Are you doing NaNoWriMo this year? How’s it going for you?
