I am a culprit in starting series and not finishing them. Sometimes, it’s because other books come out and I forget to read the new ones. Other times, I’ve been destroyed by one book that I refuse the read the rest until the series is complete.
Here are some series that I haven’t finished yet!
I read The City of Brass a couple of months ago and absolutely loved it! I really wanted to dive into Kingdom of Copper but I had other books I needed to read that month. I put it down to read in November because I was expecting to be less busy and now – well, we’ll see if that still holds true.
I read about 150 pages of this book in college and was kind of bored, so I put it down to read another day. And I never picked it back up. I ended up getting the entire series for my sister who read this book and loved it, so I have all of the books to read if I decide to try again. We’ll see.
I’ve read Furyborn and Kingsbane, but I can’t pick up Lightbringer. I’m just too scared to read the ending to this series. Kingsbane nearly killed me and that trauma is really pushing me not to read this series right now. Plus, I might want to do a re-read before reading the final book so I can get the full experience.
I loved Courting Darkness. When the second book, Igniting Darkness, came out in August, I was in the throws of reviewing and writing, so I didn’t even have the time to think about reading the sequel. Now, three months later, and I still don’t even own the book! This was one of my favorite reads of 2018 (I read the ARC) and I REALLY want to finish this duology but like with Lightbringer, I know it’s going to kill me.
Technically, I can’t finish this series because the series isn’t over yet, but I’m counting it because, like Courting Darkness, I read this book and haven’t read the next one yet. While I own this one, it’s always coming down to time. I loved this book and I know I’ll love As the Shadow Rises, but I just need some time to focus on it, which I don’t have right now.
I LOVE the Witchlands series, and this is another series that isn’t finished yet, but I am too scared to read Sightwitch and Bloodwitch. After Windwitch, I cannot bring myself to read those books and now the next one is coming out soon and I don’t know what to do! At this point I’m just going to keep putting off reading all these books until the series is over and then binge them – which doesn’t sound like that bad of an idea now that I think about it.
Ahhh – Mackenzi Lee. The author who ruined her own career by inconsiderately signing books that weren’t hers from the bookstore she worked at. Not sure why she thought that was a good idea, but now I have a conundrum. I read the first book and loved it. Part of me wants to read the rest of this series, since I already own the books, but another part of me doesn’t want to support her. So I’m in limbo at this time until I decide, though I’m not sure I’ll ever decide.
Another series that I adore and haven’t finished due to the author traumatizing me! I loved Renegades. I loved Archenemies. I did not love how they ended on cliffhangers – I’m so scared to read Supernova now. I don’t know if my poor heart can take it. Plus, I would definitely have to do a re-read of the series and again, my heart is fragile! I know I’m going to be a blubbering mess if I do a re-read and nobody wants that!
The Hazel Wood was okay and honestly, I’m not sure I want to read the other books in the series. Part of me does just to know what happens, but with so many books being released that I want to read, these are pretty low on my TBR.
This book was so freaking good! I have been trying to find a hardcover copy of Thunderhead that isn’t completely damaged to match Scythe and The Toll, but until I can get a copy, this series will remain unfinished. Though not because I don’t want to read it! I do! But – aesthetics . . .
Again, another series where I loved the first book and just haven’t read the second one. To be fair, there is a third book, so this series is unfinished, but I haven’t even read the published sequel yet. It’s currently sitting on my shelf mocking me for my failure to manage my time. I might just wait until the final book is published, re-read the first book, then read the next two.
Okay, this book is amazing and I’m smacking myself for not having read Girls of Storm and Shadow yet. But come on! The ending!? You expect me to just jumping into book 2 after THAT ENDING!? I’m really nervous to read it, especially since there will be a third book coming out. At this point I’m just going to be the person who reads the first book, buys all the sequels, and then just binge reads them once it’s complete. It’s so bad.
I read this book 2 years ago and I adored it. Court of Lions just came out and I haven’t purchased it yet, but I will! Once I get my hands on a copy I’m definitely adding it to my immediate TBR. I mean, the immediate one is like 300 books long, but I’m sure I can squeeze it in within the next three years, right?
I loved Everless, but I’ve heard that Evermore isn’t as good. I own the second book, but I’m a little nervous to read it. I remember how much I loved the first one and how I fell into the plot so easily. If the second one isn’t as good or it lags, that might ruin it for me. I think my fear will keep me from reading it a little longer, but I do plan on reading Evermore eventually!
Another completed series where I read the first book, loved it, and never picked up the others again! I think I started reading The Dazzling Heights, but I couldn’t get into it like the first book, so I put it down for another time and just never picked it up again. I only own book 2 and don’t currently have a copy of The Towering Sky, so that might also be another reason why I haven’t finished it yet. If I don’t have all the books, where’s the motivation to read through them?
Okay, I know that was a lot! Thank you for bearing with me! A lot of these series are ones that I love and want to finish, but time constraints are really cutting into my reading time and options. While I love getting the chance to review books early, it also means prioritizing upcoming ARCs and releases over already published books. I hope I can start reading more of my published TBR soon so I can finally know what happens at the end!
Any books you’ve been putting off finishing? Why?
I have a Ko-fi account! If you like my content and want to help me fund my own domain or just wants to send me a gift, I’ve linked it here! Thanks to anyone who checks it out!
That’s why I keep to standalone thrillers and wait for the right time to buy the fantasy books so that the time constraints of an ARC is not overwhelming.

Yeah that’s a good idea. A lot of times, I get the first book from a book box, or a sale and then find myself stuck reading that one but not having/reading the others. I do love thriller standalones though! They save me from combusting under the pressure to read all these series lol

Based on a good portion of this list, it’s almost like we’re the same person LOL
